Your videos stay yours and stay private. Files you upload are stored only for your account. We do not publish them, do not put them in a shared library, do not make them searchable, and do not show them to other users. Nobody signed in to a different account can reach them.
No ads, no data sales. The app carries no advertising and no ad trackers, we do not sell your data, and we do not use your uploaded media, subtitles or saved words to train AI models.
Watching is free; the dictionary is a paid feature. Payments are handled by the app stores or our payment provider — we never receive your full card number.
You can delete everything. Deleting a video removes it from our storage. Deleting your account removes your library, your vocabulary, and your profile.
This summary is for orientation only. The sections below govern.
Aleksei Prokhorov (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates LazyEnglish: mobile and desktop applications, the website at lazygeniusenglish.com, and the backend services behind them (together, the “Service”).
This Policy explains what information we collect, why, who processes it on our behalf, how long we keep it, and what you can require us to do. It applies to everyone who uses the Service. Our Terms of Use govern your rights and obligations regarding content you upload, including the copyright rules and the takedown procedure.
For users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, Aleksei Prokhorov is the controller of the personal data described here. Our data protection contact is support@lazygeniusenglish.com.
Some features ask for device permissions. Files are read only from the folders and files you pick. Microphone access, where offered, is used only while you are actively using the feature that needs it. If you decline a permission, that feature is unavailable; the rest of the Service continues to work.
This section describes commitments we consider binding, not aspirations.
Two limits you should know about. First, if we receive a valid copyright notice or a binding legal order identifying content in your account, we may access, restrict or remove that specific item as described in the Terms of Use. Second, technical isolation is strong but no system is absolutely secure; see section 10.
LazyEnglish uses YouTube API Services to look up videos you link to and to retrieve their available caption tracks. By using those features you also agree to the YouTube Terms of Service, and Google's handling of data is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
What this means in practice:
The dictionary and translation features need to send text — and, for dictated questions, a recorded voice message — to processing providers. This is what happens:
Where the Service offers a fully offline dictionary, lookups performed against a downloaded dictionary happen on your device and no text leaves it.
We disclose information to the providers below only as needed to run the Service. We keep this list current; where a provider changes, we update this Policy.
| Purpose | Provider | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Application hosting and databases | Railway | All service data |
| Media and file storage, delivery | Cloudflare R2 | Uploaded media, subtitles |
| Authentication and accounts | Sign in with Apple, Sign in with Google, Facebook Login (Meta), or email and password on our own backend | Account and sign-in data |

| Web payments | Apple App Store, Google Play | Billing details, transaction data |
| Analytics and crash reporting | AppHud, Firebase, and a session-recording provider | Usage, technical, diagnostic data |
We may also disclose information where required by law or a valid governmental request; to protect the rights, safety and integrity of the Service, our users or the public; to establish, exercise or defend legal claims, including responding to copyright notices; and in connection with a merger, financing, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case we will give notice before your data becomes subject to a different policy.

The app shows no third-party advertising. LazyEnglish contains no advertising SDKs, no ad networks and no ad exchanges. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising as those terms are used in California law.
When you install the app, the app stores give us aggregated attribution signals — Apple's SKAdNetwork and AdServices, and the Google Play install referrer — together with any campaign or UTM parameters attached to the link you followed. These tell us which campaign produced a download. They do not tell us who you are, and we do not combine them with your library or your learning data.
We may promote LazyEnglish on third-party platforms. Where such a platform offers audience tools that would require us to upload personal data (for example hashed email addresses), we use them only with your consent where the law requires it, and the platform concerned is listed in section 6. Absent that, our advertising is based on aggregate campaign performance only.
We send service messages you cannot opt out of while you hold an account — receipts, security alerts, changes to these terms, and responses to your requests. Marketing emails and in-app promotional messages are separate: we send them only where you have agreed, every message carries an unsubscribe link, and withdrawing consent does not affect the service you receive.
Push notifications are sent only after you allow them at the system prompt. You can withdraw that permission at any time in your device settings, and doing so does not limit any other feature.
We do not track you across other companies' apps and websites. The analytics described here are confined to LazyEnglish itself and to our own website.
We use a session-recording tool that replays how the interface was used — taps, scrolls and screen transitions inside LazyEnglish. Text you type, payment details and the contents of your uploaded media are masked and are not captured. Recordings are tied to a pseudonymous installation identifier, are used only to find usability problems and bugs, and are deleted on the provider's standard retention schedule. In the EEA and the UK this runs only where you have consented. You can withdraw that consent at any time by writing to support@lazygeniusenglish.com; we act on the request within 30 days.
Which screens and features you open, how often, aggregate counters such as minutes watched or words reviewed, crashes and performance traces, plus the technical data in section 2.2. These events are tied to a pseudonymous installation identifier and to your account identifier — not to your name, and never to the contents of your uploaded media.
We do not make decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects about you by automated means, and we do not profile you for such purposes. The dictionary and subtitle features are automated, but they only produce study material — they do not evaluate you.
We retain transaction and tax records, and records of copyright notices and the action we took on them, for the period required by applicable law and to establish, exercise or defend legal claims, regardless of account deletion.
You can delete individual items or your whole account inside the app at Settings → Delete account, or by writing to support@lazygeniusenglish.com.
Subject to applicable law, you may ask us to give you access to the personal data we hold about you; correct data that is inaccurate; delete your data; restrict or object to processing; provide a copy in a portable, machine-readable format; and withdraw consent where processing rests on consent. Withdrawal does not affect processing carried out before withdrawal.
Write to support@lazygeniusenglish.com. We answer within 30 days and will tell you if we need longer. We may ask you to confirm control of the account before acting on a request.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you may also complain to your national supervisory authority. If you are a California resident, you may exercise the access, deletion, correction and opt-out rights available under the CCPA/CPRA; we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
We use encryption in transit for all connections, encryption at rest for stored media, per-request server-side authorisation checks, short-lived signed URLs for playback, hashed credentials, restricted and logged administrative access, and least-privilege access for staff. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal data and the law requires notification, we will notify you and the competent authority within the required timeframes.
We and our providers process data in the European Union and the United States and in other countries where our providers operate. Where we transfer personal data out of the EEA or the UK to a country without an adequacy decision, we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (with the UK Addendum where relevant) together with a transfer risk assessment, and we require equivalent commitments from our providers.
The Service is not directed to children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact support@lazygeniusenglish.com and we will review and delete it.
We may update this Policy. The version number and effective date at the top always reflect the current text, and previous versions are available on request. Where a change materially affects how we handle your data, we will notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
